Blue Lake Press has announced the publication of Solid Brass: The Leonard Falcone Story. Solid Brass chronicles Leonard Falcone's journey to America from Italy through Ellis Island at age 16, which led to one of the most unlikely and inspirational stories in the history of the American Band Movement. This biography, written by Rita Griffin Comstock, was published in September 2011.
Drawing from a myriad of sources, Rita Comstock’s insightful biography chronicles Falcone’s remarkable life, including his early years growing up in culturally rich Roseto Valfortore, Italy, his success as a silent movie theater musician, the music department challenges during the Depression and war years, the two Rose Bowl trips via private rail car courtesy of Oldsmobile, performing with the Michigan State Band for four sitting presidents, and his special relationship with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where he would spend his final summers conducting and working with young students.
Comstock played clarinet in the Michigan State University Concert Band under Leonard Falcone and she continues to play in various community bands. She has worked as a writer for Prentice-Hall. This 398 page beautifully illustrated book can be purchased through Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
The Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival is proud to announce that Dr. Leonard Falcone’s first three albums of solo works for euphonium are now available on digital music streaming services. This collection of recordings, now titled “The Artistry of Leonard Falcone,” can be heard on services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Prime Music, and more.
Each of the 23 tracks has been digitally remastered and appears in the same order as the original recordings, which were released in 1959, 1965, and 1970. “We are excited to share Dr. Falcone’s mastery of the euphonium with a larger audience,” said Philip Sinder, Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the Michigan State University College of Music and President of the Board of Directors overseeing the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. “The Festival is grateful to the recordings’ exclusive licensee, Dr. Falcone’s daughter, Cecilia, for making these historic, virtuosic performances available.”
Born in Roseto-Valfortore, Italy, in 1899, Dr. Falcone was a professional musician (playing in the prestigious Roseto-Valfortore Town Band) before immigrating to America in 1915 at the age of 15. In 1927, he was appointed Director of Bands at Michigan State University, where he concurrently was Chairman of the Winds and Brass Department and Professor of Baritone Horn.
Dr. Falcone was truly a world-class brass player, and his reputation for excellence touched all aspects of his career. His solo performances, his bands, and his students were all characterized by his singular dedication to the highest standards.
